The deeper truths about which mystics of all ages talk, are often misunderstood by the general mass. As mystics have a different kind of understanding of reality, they often resort to paradox. Or rather, when they speak about the inner reality, it seems paradoxical to the orthodox mind who can't think 'out of the box'. But if you see closely, you will realize they both are speaking the same.
In mystical discourse its a recurring theme that all the enlightened personalities at different ages, sometime called Messengers of God or Prophets are basically the manifestation of the SAME ESSENCE. In that line the mystics will say what is Awakening of Abraham is the same as Christ Consciousness, is the same as Buddha Nature, is the same as Krishna Consciousness, is same as the Light of Muhammad (Nur Muhammad). There is no difference, no distinction in the core. Different time and culture needed different terminology to point the same.
Now for an orthodox religious person this can sound very heretic. A so called orthodox muslim, for example may feel offended when one compare the Muhammadan Light with other Prophet's or Enlightened beings' inner secret.
But if we go back to the Divine Revelation, The Quran, which no doubt is the corner stone of Islam, there it is clearly stated that among the messengers, the divine personalities, the God-conscious people - there is no distinction. And it is commanded to the humanity not to make any distinction between them. It is worth noting that Quran also acknowledge that messengers were sent to all nations of all age and not all of them are mentioned by their name.
Read the following important Quranic verses on the theme that enlightened beings of all ages are the same, and no distinction are to be made.
The Messenger believes in what has been sent down to him from his Lord, and (so do) the believers. Each one believes in God, His Angels, His Books, and His Messengers. They say, "We make no distinction between one another of His Messengers" - and they say, "We hear, and we obey. (We seek) Your Forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the return (of all)." -The Qur'an 2:285
We believe in God and that which has been sent down to us and that which has been sent down to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and to Al-Asbât (the twelve sons of Jacob), and that which has been given to Moses and 'Isa (Jesus), and that which has been given to the Prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and to Him we have submitted. -The Qur'an 2:136
And those who believe in God and His Messengers and make no distinction between any of them (Messengers), We shall give them their rewards, and God is Ever OftForgiving, Most Merciful. -The Qur'an 4:152
We believe in God and in what has been sent down to us, and what was sent down to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob and Al-Asbât (the twelve sons of Jacob) and what was given to Moses, 'Isa (Jesus) and the Prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between one another among them and to God we have submitted (in Islam). - The Qur'an 3:84
So when the mystics cut down all and utter the commonality about all such enlightened beings, they are basically speaking the same as the orthodox school of thought. This we need to realize in our age. The mystics can no longer continue to be isolated from the mass. The collective human consciousness and its evolution call-out that we need a better bridge between mystics and orthodox. We need better harmony for the sake of Truth.
