As-salaam aleikum,
peace be upon you.
When this phrase is uttered it is of itself a prayer. When it becomes a mere empty greeting of courtesy, it loses all its baraka (magnetism, blessing).
It is the basis of meditation and devotion and concentation. It is the beginning and end of all things and not just a refuge to fall back on in times of troubles; it is a refuge and more than a refuge.
- Murshid: A personal memoir of life of American Sufi Samuel L. Lewis by Mansur Johnson
Among the teachings that the Last Messenger of God, Prophet Muhammad taught was the greetings of peace, As-salaam aleikum (also written as as-salamu aleikum) which can be translated as Peace be with you or Peace be upon you. This infact was not a new thing or a new invention, the very salutation of peace was also invoked by the blessed Prophet, Jesus Christ and its still there in the New Testament. In the final chapters of Luke, John where Jesus re-appears to his disciples after his alleged crucifixion, he greets them with the same greeting which was again taught to humanity by the Last Messenger.
Luke 24:36 | While they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, "Peace be with you."
John 20:19-21 | On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you!" After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord.
Again Jesus said, "Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you."

God's Messenger, Prophet Muhammad said: There are six good qualities which one believer should display to another... and one is that they should salute each other with greetings of peace when they meet.
The Prophet said: O people! Spread the Salam (greetings), feed (the poor and needy), behave kindly to your blood relations, offer prayer when others are asleep, and (thus) enter Paradise in peace.
"When a greeting is offered you, answer it with an even better greeting, or (at least) with its like. God keeps count of all things." (The Quran, 4: 86)
Every Muslim on earth still greet one another with the same greeting, As-salam alekum and its an universal greeting for all of humanity. Now next time you hear such greeting, dont think it as such an alien greeting, know that its the same words that was once upon the blessed lips of Jesus Christ. Afterall, Arabic and Aramaic, the language of Jesus is very close.
