Having entrusted the spiritual leadership of the people to his brother Aaron, exhorting him to live purity of heart free from the slightest negation, the noble Prophet Moses responded to My Divine Call and ascended the mountain.
When My beloved Moses had completed the destined forty nights of his solitary retreat, the ultimate moment arrived on the final night, when he could converse directly with the Supreme Source Who is now speaking.
With great intensity, he prayed: "Most precious Allah, please remove every veil from my eyes that I may perceive You as You truly are."
Allah Most High responded by placing these Divine Words in the heart of His Prophet: "You will not be able to maintain your personal awareness when you encounter My Radiance, for not even this mountain could withstand the direct encounter with Divine Light."
Then the Source of Light revealed Its full Resplendence to the inner vision of the noble Moses, who felt that the mountain on which he stood had disintegrated into dust, as his personal awareness was lost in Divine Splendor.
When My beloved Moses regained consciousness of the world, he had awakened fully to his Prophethood, and immediately prayed: "Most precious Allah, the praise arising spontaneously from the minds and hearts of all beings is directed only to You. Turning whole heartedly towards You, I am the first of my generation to experience You directly as the One Reality."
Allah Most Merciful responded within the heart of His noble Messenger: "Yes, I have selected you from all human vessels to pour into you My sublime Message for humanity and the transforming Power of My Very Words. Now receive with gratitude through your personal awareness what streamed into your soul while you were lost in ecstasy."
The Source of Wisdom manifested then to the purified vision of the Prophet Moses radiant tablets containing the subtle principles of the holy way of life and the spiritual meanings of all beings and events. Allah Most Wise called within the heart of His Prophet:
"My noble Messenger, return now to your people, bearing this vast body of sacred knowledge. With strength and courage urge them to express these fundamental principles in their daily exercise. I will show you clearly that those who refuse to transform their lives into channels of My Holiness must remain imprisoned within their own suffering. This profound demonstration of Divine Love which you bring, I will conceal from those who walk the earth with arrogance, committing injustices against humanity and against the life of the planet.
Even though these arrogant ones may hear the Words of Truth which descend through you, they will remain unable to understand unless they become humble. Even though they may see people joyously living the holy way of life, they will not be able to recognize it as a fruitful path unless they become humble. These arrogant ones will perceive instead the way of selfishness as the best path, because they ignore and even consciously negate the demonstration of Love that are flowing constantly from the Source of Love."
- Meditation on Holy Koran 7:142-146
from Heart of the Koran by Lex Hixon
Meditations and illuminations from the Scripture of Islam
LA NUFARRIQU BAYNA 'AHADIM MIR RUSULIH: We make no distinction, no separation between any of God's Messengers. - The Final Testament, 2:285
Lex Hixon, Shaykh Nur was a modern Western Sufi Master, may Allah bless his soul, who richly contributed in transmitting the unimaginable beauty of the Quranic revelation through his contemplative translation. His work, Heart of the Koran is an excellent work of inspiration. His meditations has the unique quality of revealing many dimensions to the reader depending on their state and station of understanding and spiritual clarity: a quality which is also the characteristics of the original Quranic Revelation, albeit in very intense form. God willing, a reading of the close to literal translation (shared below) and moving back to the Meditation by Lex Hixon would prove this true for seekers of truth. And re-reading Lex Hixon's translation at various time will reveal further depths in his work, just as Qur'an, which is often compared as a shy bride which reveals herself slowly and unveils her beauty only to those who shows respect to its preciousness.
The meditation mentioned at the beginning of this post is from the following verses 7: 142-146 / 147, a close rendition of original classical Arabic into English:
And We made an appointment with Musa for thirty night (on Mount Sinai) and We added to them ten, so that the term of his Lord was completed in forty nights. And Musa said to his brother Harun, "Take my place among my people and act soundly and do not follow (the) way of corrupters.
And when Musa came to Our appointed place and his Lord had spoke to him, he said, "My Lord! Show me (Yourself) that I may gaze upon you."
(Allah) said, "You cannot see Me (in this world), but look to the mountain - if it remains in its place - then you will see Me." But when his Lord unveiled (His glory) to the mountain He made it crumble to dust and Musa fell down - thunderstruck. When he came to himself, he said, "Glory to You. I turn to You and I am the first of the believers!"
(Allah) said. "Oh Musa! Truly I have chosen you over the people by My Messages and by My Words, so take what I have given you and be among the thankful."
And We wrote for him in the tablets (lessons) of every kind and an explanation for everything and (said), "Hold to these with firmness and order your people to hold fast to what is best in it. I will show you the place of the corrupt. I will turn away from My Signs those who are arrogant on the earth without any right. And if they see every Sign, they will not believe; and if they see the way of guidance, will not take the way. And if they see a way of error - (they will) take it. This is because they have denied Our Signs and they are from the heedless."
And those who deny My Signs and the meeting of the Final Life - their deeds are worthless. Do they expect to be rewarded with anything except what they used to do?
